The cave of time is the first book in the choose your own adventure series which came out in the late 1970s and could arguably be the very first adventure gamebook to ever exist.
Without giving too much away, the basic story is while out hiking you find a strange cave and inside the various tunnels lead to different points in time.
Now depending on what choices you make and what direction you proceed in, you can go on some crazy adventures, from fighting sabretooth tigers and dinosaurs at the dawn of civilization to exploring space and alternate realities with the aliens and the bug people. Sometimes it does feel like the writers are trying to discreetly spoon-feed you mini-history lessons as the book is full of famous events and historical figures but it still remains entertaining nonetheless.
And it's incredibly well written, there's some impressively detailed and vivid descriptions of the events throughout the book, and the writers are really not afraid to kill you off in some gruesome ways. You'll die a lot. There are 40 different endings to be found and most of them will have your character perish in some hideous way, like being choked to death by a massive snake, but there are a few really good endings which make a nice change from the usual adventure gamebook death fest.
The illustrations are awesome, they're monochrome but really compliment the text and they remain consistent throughout its 115 pages.
I think the cave of time is brilliant, its jam-packed with a variety of themes, offers up a huge amount of replay value and above all else is just fun to read. A timeless classic in my opinion (excuse the pun)
