FFAD02 : The Forest of Doom - Lost In Darkwood

The Forest of Doom - Lost in Darkwood is the 2nd part of the Fighting Fantasy Audio Drama Series, following directly on from the Warlock of Firetop Mountain - The Hero's Quest. And just like its predecessor, this is an audio drama and not an audiobook. Think of it as watching a movie with your eyes closed.

It follows the ongoing adventures of Vale Moonwing, an elven warrior on her way to Darkwood Forest to seek help from an old friend, the grand wizard Yastromo. But of course things don't go according to plan and when she arrives, she finds that he has been kidnapped.

Just as before, this adventure is full to the brim with references and crafty nods to encounters from the original Forest of Doom gamebook. However, it's worth mentioning that this acts as a kind of prequel story, some of the events that unfold lead up to some of the encounters that you'll have to face later on.

As a huge Fighting Fantasy fan, it's satisfying to see how these events came to be but if you are new to the series and have not played through the book yet, I can see some of these as being kind of spoilers. It's just little things like the characters avoiding a certain landmark because of a known enemy or refusing to cross a body of water because it's teeming with leeches, something that you'll later be challenged with if you do play through the gamebook.

It's not a deal-breaker at all, it's just something you should be aware of before you dive in.

The voice acting is superb as always, the characters' emotions really come across in their voices this time around, even more so than in Warlock. There are some tense moments in the story and you can really feel it. The music and sound effects are fantastic too if a little loud in some places.

Once again this is a brilliant piece of Fighting Fantasy fiction and a must-have for all fans of the series.
