FFAD01 : The Warlock of Firetop Mountain - The Hero's Quest

Firstly, I think it's worth noting that this is an audio drama, it’s not an audiobook. Think of this more like a prequel movie set before the events of the original Warlock gamebook but you’re watching it with your eyes closed.

It follows the strong-willed elven warrior Vale Moonwing and her companion Cassius Stormblade as they venture deep into the dungeons beneath Firetop Mountain, to kill the warlock Zagor, just like your quest in the book.

And let me tell you it's absolutely fantastic!

The production quality is just superb. From the incredibly talented and characteristic voice actors to the enchanting music and sound effects used throughout the adventure, every second of audio here is simply brilliant. This is clearly a labor of love as the writing is so true to the source material while still offering up a truly unique experience.

I love the way the actor's lines are descriptive enough to paint these wonderful images in your imagination but subtle enough to not sound like the characters are just saying whatever they see, which is quite often how these things go.

It's worth noting however that you should play the book a few times before listening to this even though this is set before. The reason being that some of the traps, rooms, key items and encounters are lifted straight from the gamebooks pages and could affect your judgment when you do come to tackle Firetop Mountain on your own quest.

I love any excuse to add more flavor and lore to the Fighting Fantasy universe and this was no exception. It had me hooked from start to finish with a thrilling yet mysterious hour-long story that really captures the magic of the original adventure. A must-have for any Fighting Fantasy fan.
