The Legend of Zelda - ALTTP Promo Gamebook

This is some kind of promotional comic/gamebook hybrid that Nintendo bundled in with one of their magazines to help promote A Link to the Past way back in the early 1990s.

And right off the bat I'll be honest and tell you it's not great. Don't go into this thinking it's going to be some kind of awesome Legend of Zelda adventure converted into gamebook form. It's really not.

It only has 15 pages and there's maybe only around 5 or 6 actual points in the book where you get to make a decision, and those decisions are incredibly dull. Like will you pull the left lever or the right lever? No context, no puzzle solving just really bland "You'll either die or you won't" type scenarios.

The artwork is wacky too, it's almost like the graphics from the weird CDI games that Nintendo would rather we all forgot about. Worst of all though, which I think is actually unforgivable is that Link actually speaks. Not just the odd word or two either, he's a cocky arrogant loudmouth slinging all kinds of playground level trash talk at his enemies, a bit like Ash from the Evil Dead but nowhere near as cool.

For a series that’s known for its silent protagonist, this just seems super weird.

I have to say I'm not a fan of this one, sure it was a freebie and it doesn't tie into the games in any way but for me, it just feels like a really tacky piece of fan fiction and I think its probably best left in the past.

I would say if you're a huge Nintendo or Zelda fan like myself then sure this is cool as just a piece of history you know something for the collection, something to show my friends and say hey look at this weird thing Nintendo made. But as a gamebook, it just doesn't cut it.
